Climatic Alarms

Extreme weather conditions can adversely affect a crop's productivity. In order to minimize the negative effects, actions can be implemented to alleviate the incidence, severity and/or duration of the extreme weather condition experienced. These include:

• Low air temperatures early in the growing season–alleviate frost damage through:

• Implementation of water-based defenses i.e. overhead irrigation or activate wind machines
• • Low air temperature during flowering–
    increase fruit set through application of fruit set enhancing agents
  • High air temperature—alleviate heat stress through implementation of water–based defenses i.e. misters, overhead irrigation etc
  • High air temperature during spray season—reduce potential pesticide phytotoxic effects and crop damage:
    Terminate pesticide spraying at critical threshold
  • High rainfall—ensure adequate run-off to prevent water logging of root zone and rising water tables:
    Pump excessive rainfall away from crop and into storage
  • High rainfall—maximize pesticide efficacy
    Re-apply pesticides when activity terminated through wash-off

These extreme weather conditions may strike at any time. In order to implement the appropriate remedial operations, a Solution of client awareness is required.

Climatic alarms can be generated 24/7 for specific user defined Sensor conditions. The client receives an SMS message on their mobile phone as soon as the climatic alarm is triggered within SensorSentry.

This Solution provides a reliable, timely and cost effective method of informing farm managers when extreme weather conditions are prevailing. These high-risk times can then be immediately averted through the appropriate management solution.
